John Pastoriza-Piñol is an enthusiastic botanical artist working in Melbourne with a keen interest in rare and unusual plants. He has studied botanical illustration with Jenny Phillips at the Botanical Art School of Melbourne and more recently has been appointed to teach students there.
In my art I endeavor to capture the unique features of rare and unusual plants to reveal the beauty of their delicate and hidden characteristics. The purpose of my art is to educate and to conserve these unique specimens.
John’s choice of subject has been described as “more unusual and macabre”, subjects not common in the field of botanical art. These plants include the Arisaemas and Dracula orchids. All works are a life-size depiction of the chosen subject, ranging from the demure Dryadella zebrina (orchid) at a mere 4cm tall to the Streptocapus parviflorus at a grand one metre high. More ...
